What about dish soap?
Not only is dish soap slowly destroying your bike, but it is making you slower.
For lots of riders, dish soap has been the go to for bike cleanup, but most people don’t know the repercussions using dish soap can lead to. Dish soap is bad for your mountain bike because it acts as an overly aggressive degreaser. It strips away vital factory assembly greases, washes lubricants out of your suspension seals and bearings, and removes anti-corrosion coatings on nuts and bolts, leading to premature wear and rust.
Dedicated bike soap is better because its pH-neutral, salt-free formula that aggressively lifts trail dirt without stripping critical bearing grease or damaging carbon fiber and suspension seals. Unlike dish soap, which destroys all protective lubricants and contains corrosive thickeners, a dedicated wash rinses away completely with low pressure, leaving zero sticky residue that could attract dust or contaminate your disc brakes.
Dish soap destroys your drivetrain efficiency by stripping the deep lubrication inside your chain rollers. While a dedicated bike wash cleans surfaces safely, dish soap acts as an aggressive degreaser that washes away necessary oils. According to laboratory data from Zero Friction Cycling and CeramicSpeed, a lubricated chain loses only 4 to 5 watts to mechanical friction under a 250-watt load. A chain stripped dry by dish soap suffers immediate metal-on-metal rubbing, spiking friction and forcing you to waste an extra 5 to 10 watts of pedaling power.
